Overview
Spencer (he/him/his) is from Charlottesville, VA and holds an AB in German Literature from Princeton University.
His current research involves 20th and 21st century German-language literature (especially poetry), music in/and literature, minoritarian aesthetics and poetics, transnational and transcultural literatures, Black German Studies, Black Studies, postcolonial studies, performance studies and sound studies.
He seeks to approach study, pedagogy, and scholarship with intellectual and methodological openness, and to amplify historically marginalized voices within the field of German Studies and beyond.
Outside of academia, he is a trumpeter, improviser/composer, and aspiring keyboardist. He also loves to bike, jog and hike in the beautiful Ithacan countryside, seldom missing a chance to offer a friendly ‘moo’ to the cows he passes.
